Membership Criteria
The International Association of Hypnotherapist Registration (IAHR) offers six levels of membership: Student, Licentiate, Member, Senior, Fellow, and Retired. Below are the requirements and benefits for each level:
Student Membership
Open to all hypnotherapy students from any training school that meets our minimum training criteria for graduate membership of the IAHR. Membership is free for the duration of the course. Student members receive copies of our annual journal, The Hypnotherapist, and may attend regional meetings, the Annual Conference, and CPD seminars. Student members are also eligible to receive discounted liability insurance.
Licentiate Membership
Licentiate members are those who have not attended an IAHR-approved hypnotherapy training course but have met the required training criteria to join the IAHR as an ordinary licentiate member. Licentiate members may then train further to gain the approved hours of working to become a full member. (The Licentiate Member status is for the IAHR’s information only: members may just put Member on their paperwork, etc).
For a full list of training schools running IAHR-approved courses, please click here for contact details. To gain Full Membership status, Licentiate members may either:
- Gain 4 years of experience as a Licentiate member, or
- Fast Track: After 2 years of continuous membership, Licentiate members may upgrade their membership status by submitting two case study reports and two professional references.
Case Study Reports must each be between 1000 and 2000 words long and written in the style of an article suitable for publication in a hypnotherapy journal. Ideally, your case study should conclude with a section on what you have learned from this case study or why the issues raised in the case study are important to hypnotherapy or healthcare in general. A sample case study framework is available on request.
Full Membership
Hypnotherapists applying for full membership with less than five years in practice must have been trained at a school on our approved list of training courses (see appendix). As a full member, you will receive copies of our annual journal, The Hypnotherapist, and may attend regional meetings, our annual conference, and CPD seminars.
To gain Full Member status, Licentiate members can either:
- Gain 3 years of experience as a Licentiate member and submit 2 references, or
- Fast track: After 2 years as a Licentiate, they can submit 2 case studies.
Alternatively, hypnotherapists with at least five years of experience in practice can join as a full member. Applicants for full membership following this route must provide evidence of training and competence to a standard commensurate with our current requirements for full membership. Applicants must submit two references to prove they have been in practice for five years.
Senior Therapist Membership
To become a senior member of the IAHR, a hypnotherapist must have been a practicing member of the IAHR for 10 years and still be practicing.
Fellow of the International Association of Hypnotherapist Registration
A Fellow of the IAHR is a member who has been invited to become one by the board of directors for specific achievements in hypnotherapy and/or the IAHR. These will be announced each year.
Retired Membership
This membership is for those who have retired from practicing but still wish to receive the journal and keep in touch with the profession. You will receive newsletters and be invited to attend the conference and CPD courses.
